Detail Decision Model Steps 3 and 4

STEP 3: Add weights to the things that you want. A recommendation: use a weighing system of from 1 to 10, giving a 10 to the want that is the top want, or one of the top wants. You can have multiple 10’s, multiple 9’s, and so down the line. This is not a ranking exercise, simply a way to add a personal quantification to the statements that represent your want criteria. The need statements you have do not require such a step of assignment of weight, needs are either present in an alternative, or the alternative is eliminated.

Weights

               Wants

10

want to deal with people of all ages, all industries and culturally diverse population

7

want to capitalize on business experience (organizational, systems, development)

8

want to use my systems, structured disciplines, leadership, and project management

9

want to use my teaching/facilitation skills

10

want a profession with credentialing, professional colleagues, professional organizations and professional publications for the field

STEP 4: Develop career ideas. This creative step will require research of the world of work, looking more closely at careers that you have thought of in the past, asking for information of people in specific occupations, reading about occupations in the Occupational Outlook Handbook (available online), seeking the expertise of a career professional to discern trends, the marketplace, ways to conduct research to find out more about occupations, job titles, ways to start your own business or consulting practice.

example from Norm's 1987 decision:

public sector organization)
